Ally McCoist endorses former Spur for Scotland job
Ange Postecoglou
talkSPORT host Ally McCoist backs Ange Postecoglou for Scotland job after World Cup exit.
Ally McCoist, Rangers legend and popular talkSPORT presenter, has openly expressed support for Ange Postecoglou as the next Scotland manager following Steve Clarke’s resignation after Scotland’s group-stage exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Scotland qualified for the 2026 tournament (co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA) but were drawn into a brutal Group C alongside Brazil and Morocco.
The Tartan Army secured a 1-0 win over Haiti but suffered defeats to Morocco and Brazil, finishing third. They failed to advance as one of the best third-placed teams and were officially eliminated.
Hours after confirmation of the exit, long-serving manager Steve Clarke stepped down, ending a tenure that included successful qualification campaigns and back-to-back European Championships but no knockout-stage progress at a major tournament.
In a talkSPORT discussion, McCoist said he would have “no problem at all” with Postecoglou taking the Scotland job, despite the Australian’s successful spell at Celtic (where he won multiple trophies). McCoist emphasised enjoying “big Ange” managing the national team.
The Scottish FA must now begin a search for a new head coach at a pivotal time. Postecoglou remains a long-shot but intriguing name that has generated immediate buzz on talkSPORT and social media.
Would a Postecoglou appointment energize the Tartan Army and deliver the elusive knockout-stage breakthrough? Many fans are already debating it.
My take
This may be a match in paradise. Ange has huge support north of the border, and the fact that he was home before his postcards to Oz because of his disastrous stay at Nottingham Forest won’t bother many of them.

Tubby was appointed on 9 September 2025 and sacked on 18 October 2025 after just 39 days in charge — the shortest reign of any permanent Premier League manager (and the shortest in Nottingham Forest’s history).
Forest were in the relegation zone when he was dismissed, following a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea. Owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly left the stadium early during that match.
Postecoglou joined Forest after leaving the mighty Spurs with whom he achieved mixed results.
Forest struggled badly under him, with no wins in his first eight matches across all competitions. This stood in contrast to his stronger records at previous clubs like Celtic and Yokohama F. Marinos.
Scotland, the brave, indeed.

Look forward to that …
