Tactical observations
De Zerbi has stressed collective intensity, personality, and not treating the poor Stamford Bridge record as a problem — using it purely as motivation. He has also said the side can play with a back three or four depending on the game state - which will be fascinating were that to go wrong.
Given some of the noise around some of our backline, I’d be proactively looking to protect, rather than expose.
Controlling the tempo could prove vital. Spurs’ best chance is to dominate possession, force Chelsea deeper, and create volume. Avoid becoming predictable against a low/mid block.
De Zerbi has to win the midfield battle, limit Chelsea’s transitions, and convert a higher share of their expected chances through better combination play and set pieces.
A point would be a solid outcome given the venue and Chelsea’s form; a win would be a major statement of progress under De Zerbi. The Italian has the tools and the recent improvement in spirit — execution against a high-quality attack will decide it.
Roberto says “I don’t want to take risks”, which will rile many; personally, I like my footballers to recover before I try to injure them again.
I’m tempted by the price - for the draw.
Team news & injury quotes
“Pedro is back, Robertson is available, Marmoush is good, Solanke is good. Lucas Bergvall, Savio, nothing more I think… Bentancur [suspended].”
On James Maddison: “In the first three days Maddison didn’t work with us, I don’t know if he’s ready for tomorrow. We can play also with Mathys Tel, we can play with Marmoush, we can play with Gallagher… I don’t want to take risks.”
On Dejan Kulusevski: “Kulusevski also. Kulusevski worked well, but in the first days he stayed individual.”
Destiny Udogie: “No, he’s not available.” (After Manchester United; still managing carefully.) Wilson Odobert has not yet started working with the team.
Tottenham’s poor record at Stamford Bridge
“I think it’s not just this negative record. There are many, many negative records, but for me it’s one motivation more. For the players, I want this negative record, they give us more motivation, more mentality, more energy to win a game, to play a good game, because we have the qualities enough to win a game, this game.”
On any fear in the squad or club: “No… I played just one game with Chelsea as Tottenham coach. Anyway, it has to be one motivation more. Not one more problem for us… We have already many problems and this is not a problem.”
On the derby & Chelsea
“Yes, it’s a derby against one very good team, very good coach, they have a clear style of play, great players, but also Tottenham players are very good. The level of the players is high. We have to show together as a team, not as an individual.”
On Chelsea’s front three (João Pedro, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer): “One of the best, for sure… Talent, three big talents and they have also Pedro Neto, another very good player, they have Henderson and Welbeck, Estêvão, they have more than three players, but these three players are in the best moment of their career.”
Intensity, Bentancur & mentality
Referring to Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card (headbutt) at Manchester United and past battles at the Bridge: “Where is the balance? It’s always very difficult to fix a balance between the energy, the spirit, the mentality… If you have confidence in the players, you leave the players the freedom to decide their behaviour… For sure, I prefer one too strong reaction than one player without blood, without reaction.”
On approach: “You have to run, you have to fight, you have to put the same behaviour we are putting in the last two games… to play with personality, with courage.”
Other notes
On Brighton players now at Chelsea (Caicedo, João Pedro, Welbeck, Sánchez, Colwill): “Not great… Yes, but they bought great players. Nothing to say.” Motivation is the same regardless of opponent.
No comments on the referee: “I don’t want to speak about the referee… We have to keep the focus… on our game, on our plan, our mentality and our energy.”

We never do well against Chelsea, home or away.I can’t see that changing tonight. The pessimism is well fed by years of Spursiness, will it ever change?
Can’t see anything other than a comprehensive mauling. Sure, they concede goals; and we do have some creative talent back in the reckoning, but this is Chelsea, who we’ve not beaten more than once in 30 something games at the bridge. Highly negative, I know; but happy days if I’m wrong
