Djed Spence sought overseas, but the suggested transfer value will convince few

Djed Spence has been one of the players who became the talk of the tournament, certainly for a few games anyway; after all, he was playing for England. Most Tottenham fans you meet are still cooing over the buy who came to us with a slight cloud over his head, thanks to his disgruntled former gaffer, Neil Warnock of Middlesbrough.

Theirs was a notably challenging relationship. Warnock criticised Spence’s attitude and reportedly told him he could go to the top or non-league.

Spence had some social media digs at him after Forest’s promotion but has since reflected on needing to prove people wrong. Indeed, the optics on Djed have been favourable. His general play has improved, and the business of not shaking Thomas Partey’s claw was well received.

Gazzetta in Italy appear to think Djed will be cheap, which seems disingenuous at best. Even without my Lilywhite-tinted blinkers on, I can see Transfermarkt have him listed at €30 million, which probably means he ‘street’ value is nearer €50 million. I don’t make the rules, and his home-grown status will only fatten the pot, like a generous fistful of rice.

Spence is straightforwardly worth more than the number Gazzetta have pulled out of its hat, and Tottenham are under zero pressure to sell. I don’t think it is any more complicated than this.

Equally, Djed needs a fully fledged breakout season with us, and Inter might lack the appeal of that opportunity.
