I think it is becoming clear now that this new generation of ENIC, the 'nepo twins', Vivienne and Charles, actually mean business. This is not your typical Levy scam operation, whereby we are disingenuously linked to numerous big name players who then, calculatedly, all fall through. This is different and it feels different. There is genuine intent here. Three quality defensive signings in the first 5 days of the transfer window tells its own story. Now midfield is being addressed. I can only conclude, albeit a conclusion tempered by umpteen years of careworn cynicism, that we are on the cusp of a truly transformative transfer window. If so, bring it on!
It certainly does feel different, but I need these touted names holding up our shirt for us to be convinced.
We've heard this all before and false dawns have been a plenty.
My issue is that if we'd just lost in the Champions League, we would be well in the running for Tonali and Wharton. I know wages will matter, but these 2 payers will have teams wanting them that are more set to compete for the big trophies around Europe than we are.
I still think it’s more about when it looked like we were going down and they ran the numbers, the penny dropped that all this other stuff - the concerts, boxing, NFL, go karts, walking on the stadium roof!!! - These things are all small fry compared to the money in the Premier League and Europe. Relegation with such huge operational costs and loans for a season, or two or three would have been unsustainable. I think that was a wake-up call, and that’s why they will invest the money needed to ensure that threat doesn’t return, they will bankroll it to the hilt. They also know that it’s all about the wages, pay the player more wages than other clubs and the agents will drag their player there. Pay the right fee, structure the payments properly and pay the wages then I reckon most of the targets will come.
It would be great to get this deal over the line. Its a sensible signing, even with big money. Ultimately it improves the squad significantly. Lets see how we fair in negotiations with Newcastle United.
Encouraging signs from ENIC but we need to start getting rid of some of these wage thieves that are clogging up the squad.
If we’d already secured an English lad in Wharton or Scott I’d have been tempted to offer Newcastle Gallagher.
I’m 50/50 with Gallagher but with the lack of English players in the squad I’d say he’s safe as houses to remain as stands.
