"I think he’s got to go, personally"
Darren Anderton sat down with a bookmaker last week, and with Romero’s exit now close, he has given a blunt verdict on the departing captain.
He also names the man he wants wearing the armband next, and says Spurs overpaid “100 per cent” on Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
On Cristian Romero:
“I think he’s got to go, personally. Take away all the Argentina stuff and the behaviour at the end of last season - wanting to go and watch his hometown team instead of being there for our last game. He let the team down a lot, and as a captain you’ve got to be reliable. He isn’t.”
“At times he can be such a good defender - he can go and score goals and lead by example that way - but there are too many moments. Even last year at Manchester United: we were playing well for the first 20 minutes, thinking this looks great, and then a silly tackle, a red card, we’re up against it and we get beat. That happens too much for me. So I think it would probably be the best thing for everyone.”
On who should replace him as captain:
“I’d love to see Van de Ven be the captain, and for him to react in the right way and grow as a leader with that responsibility.”
“Put him in a solid back four or five, whatever it is, with a game plan for how we play and how we defend, with an organised coach - I think he will be the best defender in the league. I really do.”
