Good afternoon, fight fans.
The last fortnight has been a series of discontented mumblings, which, whilst I understand, I really don’t embrace.
As I said here, if one is meeting one’s mate in the pub at 8 pm, one does not start blocking him on one’s phone at a quarter to eight for being late.
Supporters are mostly excited and optimistic that this represents a genuine squad rebuild rather than the usual incremental or underwhelming windows. We finished 17th, back-to-back!
Early big spends had raised expectations high. Fans appreciate prioritising midfield and defence first (for De Zerbi’s style), with attackers expected to follow. There’d been a genuine buzz about Savinho and potential Marmoush completing a strong window. Some posts describe the squad as “serious” and potentially “scary” under De Zerbi.
Long-time Spurs fans rightly or wrongly temper enthusiasm with “years of false dawns,” urging patience and noting that outgoings and integration still matter. Some want a proven central striker more urgently and debate specific price profiles.
A minority question if the spending can fully erase recent struggles in one window. Perhaps that minority are still looking for the sort of value that no longer exists?
Rival fans and neutrals have also noted the aggressive approach (sometimes with envy or surprise that players chose Spurs), while Spurs supporters push back against criticism of the spending.
The overall mood among the fanbase is the most upbeat in some time regarding recruitment, with many rating the window highly so far and hoping the late-window attacking reinforcements seal it.
Micky van de Ven is the new Tottenham Hotspur captain. Manager Roberto De Zerbi confirmed this today during a press conference, ahead of the new Premier League season. Van de Ven replaces Cristian Romero, who left the club earlier in August to join Atlético Madrid.
He is part of a five-player leadership group:
Captain: Micky van de Ven
Vice-captain: Pedro Porro
3rd: Ben Davies
4th: James Maddison
5th: Archie Gray
Godspeed, Spurs.
