From that angle it is clear the defender gets a touch first[just] and there a is a slight deflection on the direction of the ball. That's not a penalty in my view. However as those of us on here have different opinions on the incident ,then so would a room full of referees I'm sure .

It's all subjective and it's why there is confusion in the use of VAR.The idea of 'clear and obvious error' has gone out of the window and these microscopic investigations of an offside toenail drive me fucking mad

If only all decisions like this were the same! They are not. This ref chose to ignore what other refs may have decided constituted a clear penalty. Without total consistency you get controversy. VAR does not always help for the same reason that the adjudicators are flawed human beings!

the ref will be a "floored " fucking human being if ............... joking obviously !!!!!!!!!

He got the ball first ..great challenge ..he didn’t go through his man Maddison took off ..Maddison was going to achieve little that close to the by line..imagine how you would feel if a pen was given against VDV for that challenge....4.2 4.8 ..5.1…3.9 ..4.0..degree of difficulty ..0.

Personally, I think his theatrics going down have further muddied the waters in terms of how the whole was viewed. Even the slightest contact on the attacker in possession can lead to a pen these days (I don’t agree with that either).

Maddison places his leading foot down and the defender kicks his foot at the same time and the direction of the ball changes. It would have been a little harsh on Leeds but you see loads given like that. Everything favours the attacker these days, if the attacker is touched by the defender's boot with no ball contact you see them given all the time.

Madders should have not used his trailing leg and stayed on his feet and then stumbled after his foot was kicked, he made too much of it. If that had then been VAR’d, then I reckon it could well have been given.

It’s the lack of consistency that’s the issue, across the board. Nobody actually knows, exactly, because the rules are interpreted differently every time. Madders thinks it’s a pen and he’s a top level pro, it’s mostly subjective. Which is why VAR should be binned, helps nothing

No way that’s not a pen. It’s a penalty all day. Even if he does get a feather of a touch, it did not alter the direction of the ball and his attempted tackle prevented Maddison from crossing it. Pen.

It’s a mistake though, I don’t buy into PGMOL using VAR to fix outcomes. I do agree with Maddison’s claim that refs are bottling it and relying on VAR to call them the monitor.

A logical conclusion Gon , plus a little cleverness from Madders to invite a slightly mistimed tackle . That gets a pen most times , them's the rules .

As a striker or a player going at pace in the box if you know the defender is going to come across you as in this instance you gamble on going over if the shots not on.

Before VAR or for example in the lower divisions where it’s not used. That’s a penalty even though the player got the ball first. It’s too quick for the officials to see the defenders foot hitting ball first.

Maddison invites the challenge. This time it didn’t come off. I’ll probably do the same tonight when I’m playing. I’ll guarantee I’ll win at least two free kicks.

And its not rule breaking Jimmy.............

The dark arts of football my friend. Many fans have no idea about them. I’m no longer surprised when I do things and players around me don’t know what’s just happened.

Simple stuff. Stand in front of a free kick to prevent it being taken quickly. Don’t return or retrieve the ball for your opponent. Let them get it.
