Sources: After Sandro Tonali, Tottenham will try for another Dutchman
Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham
Spurs have sprung into life with the capture of Mateus Fernandez from West Ham United, and suddenly the earlier transfer activity has a sense of swagger about it.
As Finn rightly told us, Tonali is the weathervane by which we can judge the club’s intentions. A further indicator would be any other high-profile additions.
Sources close to the club tell me that Spurs are far from finished, and a stark rationalisation of our situation was made in the Tottenham boardroom after we escaped relegation for a second time.
I understand that more players are due to leave, and that the revamp generally is not over. I may regret passing this on, but the word is that the ambition to back De Zerbi is very real. Another piece of Roberto’s puzzle is Summerville.
Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham
The notion of Crysencio Summerville to Tottenham is not a new one. Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider revealed back in May:
“West Ham know the vultures will be circling for their best players if they do suffer relegation, and Summerville is one of those who is in huge demand.”
The Mirror, amongst many, named us as an interested party; however, I am told that serious discussions for Summerville will take place once West Ham have been given time to adjust to life without Fernandez.
De Zerbi has for some time had the young winger on his shortlist; his direct dribbling and work rate suit Roberto’s system; he can rotate with Tel/Odobert/Kudus/etc.
How would Summerville fit in?
Summerville is undoubtedly a strong tactical match for De Zerbi’s system. As a right-footed left winger, he embodies the “wrong-footed winger” profile De Zerbi favours: players who can hug the touchline, drive inside on their stronger foot to shoot/create, or drop into half-spaces.
Crysencio could be an excellent profile fit, adding some dynamism and direct threat without disrupting core structures. The Dutchman could rotate or compete with existing wide options while fitting seamlessly into De Zerbi’s emphasis on technical, mobile attackers who can play between lines or pin full-backs.
My take
This is the kind of pragmatic, profile-driven signing Spurs should target to rebuild attacking depth without breaking the bank.
If they can get him for a fair fee (£35-45m), it strengthens the squad meaningfully for a push up the table under De Zerbi.
Summerville would be great but surely it will take more than £50m to get him? I want us to sign him just to wind up the spammers...again!
So if we also land Tonali, which I continue to be skeptical of, we will have in a just few weeks made a real statement of intent and of course finally properly backed a manager for the first time in decades.
BUT...we need someone to actually regularly score goals, it will be interesting to see who RDZ has fingered.
I suspect there will be a hiatus of procurement for a week or so, Tonali aside, as we will focus on getting rid of the many items of junk we have collected over the last years.
But all in all we seem at last to be behaving in the manor a so called 'big club' should.
