Tottenham looking to convert De Zerbi appeal into transfer of £70M man
Tottenham Hotspur are preparing a record-breaking bid for Liverpool’s Dutch winger Cody Gakpo in the summer transfer window.
Spurs are ready to pay around €70 million for the 27-year-old, whose ability to operate both wide and centrally, combined with his Premier League experience and suitable age profile, makes him an attractive investment for the North London club.
Liverpool, however, have not taken a definitive stance on the player’s future. The club could approve Gakpo’s departure if a significant offer arrives.
The player’s desire to leave is also accelerating the process. Following Arne Slot’s dismissal, Gakpo is said to have questioned his future at Anfield and reportedly informed the board of his wish to move on. He is believed to be seeking a new project, with Tottenham’s plan under Roberto De Zerbi seen as particularly appealing.

Alongside Spurs, Newcastle United and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation. Yet Tottenham aim to gain the upper hand in the race thanks to their financial strength and De Zerbi’s new project. For Liverpool, Gakpo’s sale this summer could provide valuable resources to fund incoming transfers.
It’s a plausible move on paper, and Gakpo is a technically strong, versatile left-sided forward; however, big fees for players leaving “big six” rivals often face hurdles. Things could move quickly after the international break.
My take
Replacing Sonny has been long overdue. At 27, this may not be ideal, but this is who our owners are. Let that sink in before turning one’s nose up at players that might not be ideal.
